About this Photograph: For all his greatness on the course, Tom Watson entered the 1982 season without his name on the U.S. Open trophy. It's a title he desperately wanted to win, especially at Pebble Beach, where he played quite a bit during his days at Stanford University. But in the final round, Jack Nicklaus looked poised to win a record fifth title. Nicklaus, playing in front of Watson, shot a final-round 69 for the clubhouse lead at 4-under 284. Watson, who had outdueled Nicklaus in a memorable final round at the 1977 British Open at Carnoustie, looked doomed when his tee shot at the par-3 71st hole found rough to the left of the hour-glass-shaped green. When caddie Bruce Edwards told him to hit it close, Watson responded by saying, "I'm going to make it." The prophetic Watson did indeed hole the chip, then added a birdie at 18 for good measure to defeat Nicklaus by two strokes. The holed chip remains one of golf's most poignant moments in major-championship history.
