Taming A Monster

About this Photograph: Prior to the 1951 U.S. Open, Robert Trent Jones Sr. was brought in by Oakland Hills to toughen the layout. When the alterations were finished, the New York Times dubbed the course "The Monster" because of its extreme difficulty and length. That seemed to play into the hands of defending champion Ben Hogan, who shot 138 (71-67) on the final day to claim the title by two strokes over Clayton Heafner. Hogan later called his final-round 67 the greatest he had ever played "under the circumstances."
