About this Photograph: Francis Ouimet, a 20-year-old former caddie who grew up across the street from The Country Club, was not considered a favorite entering the 1913 U.S. Open. English stars Harry Vardon and Ted Ray had spent the summer in the U.S. defeating their competition in exhibition matches, and most expected the streak to continue at the U.S. Open. Vardon, winner of five British Opens, and Ray were in the clubhouse tied for the lead when Ouimet birdied the 71st hole and forced a three-way playoff. In the playoff, Ouimet again birdied the 17th hole en route to a five-shot win over Vardon, the 1900 Open champion. Ray, who would win the Open in 1920, finished six strokes back.
