Ben Hogan was on track to win his record fifth U.S. Open in 1955 when unheralded Jack Fleck, who had only amassed $7,500 in career earnings in 41 events, managed to defeat the greatest player of the era. Fleck rallied on the second nine at The Olympic Club's Lake Course and tied Hogan by holing an 8-foot putt at the 72nd hole to force an 18-hole playoff the next day. In the playoff, Fleck shot a 69 to Hogan's 72 to register one of the Open's greatest upsets.
