Els outlasted three others down the stretch at Congressional C.C. to win his second U.S. Open title in four years. Competing on the longest course in Open history (7,213 yards), Els finished with five consecutive pars en route to a final-round 69 and a 4-under-par winning total of 276. He finished a stroke ahead of Colin Montgomerie and two shots in front of Tom Lehman.
