About this Photograph: Ben Hogan's 1-iron approach shot to the 72nd green of the 1950 U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pa., is one of the game’s iconic images. Hogan parred the hole to get into an 18-hole playoff, which he went on to win over Lloyd Mangrum and George Fazio the following day. The victory, the second of Hogan’s record-tying four U.S. Open titles, came just 16 months after he was gravely injured when a Greyhound bus struck the car in which he and his wife, Valerie, were traveling. After the accident, doctors wondered if he would ever walk again, much less play professional golf. (USGA Museum, from the Hy Peskin Collection)
