It had been 10 years since Annika Sorenstam had her hands around the U.S. Women's Open trophy. Despite some close calls, Sorenstam had yet to capture a third Open title despite being the world's most dominant female player. That ended at Newport (R.I.) C.C., where she outlasted Pat Hurst in an 18-hole playoff to win for the first time since 1996. Hurst carded a final-round 69 to force the playoff, but couldn't recapture the momentum the next day, shooting a 74 to Sorenstam's 70.
