About this Photograph: Many a golfer has been victimized by one of the most famous bunkers in all of golf. The Church Pews bunker is situated between the third and fourth fairway. Club founder and designer Henry Fownes, a Pittsburgh industrialist who didn’t pick up the game until he was nearly 40, and his son William, winner of the 1910 U.S. Amateur, both liked bunkers. The problem was Pennsylvania's shale subsoil creates drainage problems, prevented them from creating deep bunkers like those found at classic Scottish layouts. So they just made wider bunkers and it led to the creation of the Church Pews.
