About this Photograph: The early years of the U.S. Open were dominated by English and Scottish immigrants who came to work as professionals at fledgling U.S. clubs. Among that group included Horace Rawlins, who won the inaugural U.S. Open on his home course, Newport (R.I.) Country Club. Willie Anderson remains the only player to win three consecutive U.S. Opens, accomplishing the feat from 1903-05. He won four overall, tying him with Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan and Bob Jones. Alex Smith captured the 1906 Open by seven strokes over William Smith.
