About this Photograph: In 1909 Robert Gardner became the youngest winner of the U.S. Amateur Championship when he downed two-time titlist H. Chandler Egan, 4 and 3, at Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill. A day before the final, Egan suffered from a bit of indigestion after eating some hot apple pie midway through his semifinal victory over Charles Evans. Egan didn't seem his normal self during the 36-hole final and Gardner, a Yale University student, managed to beat his Harvard-educated opponent. Six years later, Gardner beat John Anderson, 5 and 4, in the final at the Country Club of Detroit. In 1916, Evans defeated Gardner in the Amateur final, 4 and 3.
