Born in Illinois, Virginia Van Wie went to become a great female champion during the 1930s, capturing three consecutive U.S. Women's Amateur titles from 1932-34. Van Wie did lose two final matches to rival Glenna Collett Vare in 1928 and 1930, but defeated Vare to win her first title in '32. In 1934, Van Wie completed her three-year reign with a 2-and-1 decision over Dorothy Traung. Van Wie also competed on the first two victorious USA Curtis Cup teams in 1932 and '34.
