Gene Sarazen, like Francis Ouimet in 1913, emerged from the caddie ranks to win the first of his two U.S. Open titles, holding off amateur Bob Jones and John Black for a one-stroke victory at Skokie C.C. Born from Italian immigrants, Sarazen became the first golfer to attain the career Grand Slam (U.S. Open, British Open, Masters and PGA Championship), where he is now joined by Jack Nicklaus, Ben Hogan, Gary Player and Tiger Woods.
