About this Photograph: England's Harry Vardon is perhaps best known for his playoff defeat to Francis Ouimet in the 1913 U.S. Open at The Country Club. But Vardon was one of the great champions of his era, winning a record six British Open titles and the 1900 U.S. Open by two strokes at Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, Ill. Vardon came to the U.S. for a series of exhibitions to promote his Vardon Flyer golf ball. Today, the Vardon Trophy is given out to the PGA Tour player with the best stroke average.
