About this Photograph: One of five boys from a golfing St. Andrews, Scotland family, Fred Herd came to the U.S. in 1895 at the age of 21, entering the first of his five U.S. Opens in 1898. Playing the nine-hole Myopia Hunt Club, which required eight trips around the layout, Herd defeated Alex Smith by seven strokes in a field that included 49 participants. Herd's brother, Sandy, won the 1902 British Open, making the Herds one of two brother combinations to have won the British and U.S. Opens (Laurie and Willie Auchterlonie are the other).
