About this Photograph: At 1929 U.S. Open Bob Jones owned a three-stroke lead on Gene Sarazen and was four strokes ahead of Al Espinosa through 54 holes. Espinosa closed with a 75 for a 294 total. Jones looked to have the championship wrapped with four holes left, but he made a disastrous 7 on 15. Then he three-putted 16 from 20 feet and suddenly he needed to par the final two holes to force a playoff. After a routine 4 at 17, he missed the green at 18. His chip stopped some 12 feet from the hole, leaving him a tricky par putt. But in typical Jones fashion, he rolled in the putt for a 79. The next day, Jones dominated Espinosa in the scheduled 36-hole playoff, 141-164, to claim his third U.S. Open title.
