About this Photograph: Phil Mickelson looked poised to finally get a U.S. Open title in 2004 at Shinnecock Hills on the eastern end of Long Island. But a costly three-putt at the 71st hole opened the door for the hot-putting Retief Goosen to snatch the championship for the second time in three years. Goosen, who also won in 2001 at Southern Hills, posted a two-stroke victory over Mickelson. Mickelson finished second at the Open for the third time in his career.
