About this Photograph: Known as the Silver Scot, Tommy Armour lost sight in one eye during World War I and also took eight pieces of shrapnel to his shoulder while in combat. While convalescing, he took up golf and eventually emigrated to the U.S., where he turned pro in 1924. Three years later, he holed a 10-foot putt at the 72nd hole at Oakmont (Pa.) C.C. to tie Harry "Lighthorse" Cooper, whom he defeated in an 18-hole playoff to win the U.S. Open. Armour would also win the 1930 PGA Championship and 1931 British Open.
