About this Photograph: On some holes, it is hard to see if the fairway is clear. To avoid golfers hitting into other golfers, courses often erected wooden periscopes so that players from the tee could see if the fairway was clear from other players. Such devices can still be found on courses today. Other courses have a bell players ring when the coast is clear.
