About this Photograph: After winning the year's first three majors, Bob Jones came to Merion Cricket Club in the Philadelphia suburb of Ardmore, Pa., to see if he could pull off what was conceived as impossible: win all four major golf championships in the same year. Earlier in the summer, he had traveled to Britain with the USA Walker Cup team and won the British Open at Hoylake and the British Amateur at St. Andrews. Then he went to Interlachen C.C. in Minneapolis and won the U.S. Open. At Merion, Jones was dominant, defeating Eugene Homans in the 36-hole final, 8 and 7, for his fifth Amateur title and ninth overall USGA championship, thus completing the grand slam.
