While the U.S. Open purses have certainly risen since the $150 handed out in 1895, the non-monetary prizes have remained the same. Every champion gets to keep the U.S. Open trophy for a year and each receives a gold medal similar to the one given Horace Rawlins for his triumph at the inaugural Open in 1895 at Newport (R.I.) G.C.
